Welcome to the MBS China Centre quarterly newsletter! Reviewing events and activities that our Centre has organized in this period, I feel so proud of our China team. Right after the Chinese New Year, Phil Roebuck, executive director of the BritCham, a native Mancunian delivered a wonderful talk on the city of Manchester which also launched Manchester photo competition- one of the series celebrations of MBS’ 50th anniversary. We are also honored to have Mr. Chris Lu, government director of Diageo and Dr. Rick Xu, senior executive coach shared their insights via our GEMBA thought Leaders’ talk.

MBS presented at "Dubai Week in China"
The first “Dubai Week in China” was successfully held in Beijing from 8th to 15th May, showcasing the leading business industries of Dubai including business, culture, education and finance. As the role model of international education, Dubai Centre director was invited to attend education seminar and China Centre director joined the event for a wider PR campaign in Beijing.

Manchester-Tongji New Students Gathering
On Saturday, 25th April 2015, the new intake Manchester-Tongji Dual Degree MBA Programme firstly gathered together at MBS China Centre. Mr. Nigel Banister, Chief Global Officer, together with Professor Elaine Ferneley, Global and MBA Director, Ms. Sherry Fu, MBS China Centre Director and Mr. Jiyao Xun, Associate MBA Director attended the event and kickoff the very first event for the new students which remark the beginning of a life-changing journey.

UoM QA Team visits MBS China Partners
On 21st April, MBS China Centre warmly welcomed The University of Manchester QA team leading by Vice Dean of UoM, Professor Kersti Börjars. This is the second time China Centre has the honour to host QA team in China. The purpose of the visit is to evaluate the Tongji-MBS MBA programme and to approve new partnership with Renmin Business School.

On 17th April, Sherry and 15 MBS Global Part-time MBA students were invited to participate in the TV show ”Brain Storm”, a CBN (China Business News) programme, to bring Manchester’s spirit of innovation and original thinking into the programme.

MBS China Director Launched new book at Columbia and Harvard
On the 4th & 5th April 2015 afternoon in USA, Chinese Corporate Soft Power, Business Opportunities in China and Entrepreneurship in the US and China forum was successfully held at Columbia University and Harvard University. Ms. Sherry Fu, Regional director of Manchester Business School, was invited and delivered keynote speeches. More than 300 participants attended the forums.

GEMBA residential workshop successfully held At Dubai Centre
The GEMBA cohort’s first visit to Dubai in early March was an opportunity to immerse them in the unique local business culture; the Middle East Centre team hosted the group and created access to a number of high level executives, thought leaders and organisations through specially organised events and visits, as part of the GEMBA+ programme.

GEMBA Thought Leaders’ Talk - Government Relations
Being one of the biggest alcohol suppliers in Chinese market which has a large population of alcohol consumers, a good relationship with Chinese government is obviously key issue to Diageo’s development and success in this market. It is honoured to have Chris Lu, Director of Government Relations with Diageo to deliver a government relations talk at China Centre on 8th March.

International Women’s Day Open Lecture: Find Your Perfect Balance
On 8th March, the International Women’s Day, MBS China Centre invited Mei Ka Chin (MK), Director of Women Healthcare service with United Family Hospital to deliver a speech on women’s health. Our Global MBA 2013 January Intake student, Dr. Helena Deng joined MK to share her personal experience of how she balances her work, life and study. Jasmine Wang, MBS China Centre staff, who is also a certificated Yoga teacher, shared some Yoga postures people can practice in their offices.

People Management & Organisation by Dr. Martin Corbett
About 20 people came to the workshop taster delivered by Dr. Martin Corbett. “I find it very useful for me to meet the professor, and understand how he delivers the workshop, initiates students to think instead of just taking in information and knowledge. Operations Management by Professor Paul Taaffe
The Operations Management workshop taster "Strategic Operational Challenges Confronting Organizations in a Shifting Global Landscape" given by Professor Paul Taaffe on Tuesday 3rd March was a real success with over 35 prospective MBA candidates attended. The Manchester MBA aims to transform students into international managers,workshop tutors always encourage students to think of the solution in an innovative way. There is a famous saying “think out of the box”, on Paul’s class, he further to ask the student “why not get rid of the box? “

Negotiation Skills and Selling Strategy by Professor Malcolm Smith
On 22nd April, Professor Malcolm Smith delivered a Global MBA Workshop Taster Negotiation Skills and Selling Strategy at China Centre. It is apparently a hot topic, the event attracted over 50 attendees. Malcolm introduced his very practical and interactive session "Negotiation". The whole premise of negotiation skills is that you have to have your own sense of "value" and Malcolm explains that "negotiation" primarily is about your own sense of "self-worth".

Sherry Fu’s feature story in Ftimes Dialogue
Ms. Sherry Fu, China Centre Director of MBS, was interviewed by Shanghai Fesco, one of the most influential human resource organisations in China. She talked about the achievement of MBS and the development strategy of MBS China Centre. She also shared her experience of how to operate a successful business school as a female executive.

During the 1st Dubai Week held in Beijing, Ms. Sherry Fu and Ms. Randa Bessiso, Regional Directors of MBS was interviewed by Sina.com, a leading digital media portal in China. They shared the strategic role of both China and Dubai Centres as two biggest international centres of MBS. They also commented on the achievements of Manchester Global MBA in Asia and Middle East market.

Dr. Cliff Mitchell, Senior Fellow at MBS was interviewed by Which MBA, a leading media portal in Business Education. During the interview, Dr. Mitchell was invited to advice for the young generation of business professionals in China regarding Strategic Project Management in the context of ever-changing Global Business. He emphasized on the influence of internet era from a strategic view of project management.

China Centre Staff Annoucement
Warm Welcome to Ms. Yang Yang Yang Yang joined MBS as Course Counsellor and Marketing Officer in April 2015. Together with the Recruitment team, she provides counselling to potential MBA students and thus, facilitates their decision process. Prior to MBS, she worked in China Britain Business Council Shanghai Office as Project Manager for more than 3 years. She specialised in providing advice to UK companies about the Chinese market and helping them develop their business by delivering bespoke market research, identifying partners and organising forums and seminars. Her research projects focus on education& retail sectors.
