Authentic Leadership: Why should anyone be led by you? Presented by Dil Sidgu at the British Chamber Event in Shanghai
On the 23rd of  April 2014, MBS Chief External Officer Dil Sidhu presented “Authentic Leadership: Why should anyone be led by you” to British Chamber of Commerce members in Shanghai. The event was organised by the British Chamber and was kindly sponsored by KPMG China

Dil’s speech attracted nearly 40 British Chamber members, all top management leaders from companies, there were Partners, CEOs, Chief Representatives, VPs and Directors from a wide range of industries, who are all leaders within their company, and they were here trying to have a better and more complete understanding of “Why should anyone be led by them”.

Dil Sidhu recently joined Manchester Business School in UK as Chief External Officer, he has a rich and varied set of experiences gained from the retail, government and professional services sectors. He is a self-confessed ‘Life Student’ and has successfully completed 3 Master’s level degrees and is an alumnus of London Business School and Harvard University. Dil has taught on executive and MBA programmes since 2003 and his current focus with MBS is to develop the Executive Education.

Dil started his presentation by explaining the roles of leadership. Leaders don’t do everything themselves, they provide direction and values, they shape the oranisational culture and they get result! He then showed researches done by Manchester Business School on all categories of books and articles about leadership and also on common characteristics great leaders share together with case studies of famous leaders like Sir Richard Branson and Bill Gates.

So what authentic leaders possess? First they can sense the situations and articulate them; they get close with their employees but they also keep a distance; they know themselves and know how to show themselves; they are not afraid of sharing their weaknesses but carefully; they know how to communicate and with care; last but not least, they always bear in mind that change is the only constant, so they adapt quickly to changes.

At the end of his speech, Dil emphasized that to be a good leader one should first be authentic and be himself/herself. Nobody can be a great leader when trying to be someone else and copy what others do. Manage yourself first, then manage others. So be yourself but with skills.

In order to “be yourself”, you must first “know yourself”, this is how a Manchester Business School Global EMBA programme can help you with. Our very unique course “The Reflective Manager” helps future leaders to clearly see how they make decisions, solve problems and manage complex situations, so that they can know themselves better, and be themselves in the leadership role.

The MBS Global EMBA programme aims to build great business leaders for the future. From course structure to time schedule, it is all carefully and scientifically designed to do so. Download the Global EMBA brochure here if you would like to know more about MBS Global EMBA programme.
