Follow the successful event, “Eight Steps of Lean Innovation, by Peter Harris. MBS Chine Centre invites Peter Harris to share his insights on the topic of innovation on the 24th of April 2014.
Peter Harris has extensive executive management, financial, operating and acquisitions experience. He was previously President, ARCO Chemical Asia-Pacific and directed business in China and Asia in excess of $1 billion per year. He also held senior executive and financial management positions in Atlantic Richfield and Sun Oil over a period of three decades and is currently a Senior Advisor to BDA, a private investment banking firm that advises on international mergers and acquisitions with offices in Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Bahrain, London and New York.
Peter explained in detail what his understanding of innovation is, as well as for some well-known successful business people like Steven Jobs and Sir Richard Branson, what innovation means to them. Why it is important to a company, how it can be learned, and how leadership is the key to innovation in a company. It is said “The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get the old ones out.” This part highlighted the essence of Peter’s lecture of the night. Peter also emphasized some behavioral skills key to innovation: questioning, observing, networking and experimenting.
Some useful tips to people who would like to be a successful innovator: don’t be satisfied with status quo; be passionate to be the best; don’t be afraid to be a risk taker; do not dwell on failures; open up to new ideas; be persistent; be disciplined; last but not the least, be a good team player!
This event was only open to Global EMBA prospects. After Peter’s presentation, MBS China Centre Regional Director Sherry Fu introduced GEMBA programme to prospects and took questions from audience. She also mentioned how MBS Global EMBA is “innovative” itself. “The Reflective Manager” and “GEMBA+” module is very unique and makes us stand out from other EMBA programme. “The Reflective Manager” allows our students to reflect on, and critically assess the way they make decision, solve problems and manage complex situations. And “GEMBA+” will give extra-curricular value to our EMBA programme. From GEMBA+ activities, our students will be able to develop their global high level network, take one-to-one coaching given by global CEOs, enhance interpersonal skills and raise their personal profile globally.

Authentic Leadership: Why should anyone be led by you? Presented by Dil Sidgu at the British Chamber Event in Shanghai
On the 23rd of April 2014, MBS Chief External Officer Dil Sidhu presented “Authentic Leadership: Why should anyone be led by you” to British Chamber of Commerce members in Shanghai. The event was organised by the British Chamber and was kindly sponsored by KPMG China
On the 23rd of April 2014, MBS Chief External Officer Dil Sidhu presented “Authentic Leadership: Why should anyone be led by you” to British Chamber of Commerce members in Shanghai. The event was organised by the British Chamber and was kindly sponsored by KPMG China
Dil’s speech attracted nearly 40 British Chamber members, all top management leaders from companies, there were Partners, CEOs, Chief Representatives, VPs and Directors from a wide range of industries, who are all leaders within their company, and they were here trying to have a better and more complete understanding of “Why should anyone be led by them”.
Dil Sidhu recently joined Manchester Business School in UK as Chief External Officer, he has a rich and varied set of experiences gained from the retail, government and professional services sectors. He is a self-confessed ‘Life Student’ and has successfully completed 3 Master’s level degrees and is an alumnus of London Business School and Harvard University. Dil has taught on executive and MBA programmes since 2003 and his current focus with MBS is to develop the Executive Education.
Dil started his presentation by explaining the roles of leadership. Leaders don’t do everything themselves, they provide direction and values, they shape the oranisational culture and they get result! He then showed researches done by Manchester Business School on all categories of books and articles about leadership and also on common characteristics great leaders share together with case studies of famous leaders like Sir Richard Branson and Bill Gates.
So what authentic leaders possess? First they can sense the situations and articulate them; they get close with their employees but they also keep a distance; they know themselves and know how to show themselves; they are not afraid of sharing their weaknesses but carefully; they know how to communicate and with care; last but not least, they always bear in mind that change is the only constant, so they adapt quickly to changes.
At the end of his speech, Dil emphasized that to be a good leader one should first be authentic and be himself/herself. Nobody can be a great leader when trying to be someone else and copy what others do. Manage yourself first, then manage others. So be yourself but with skills.
In order to “be yourself”, you must first “know yourself”, this is how a Manchester Business School Global EMBA programme can help you with. Our very unique course “The Reflective Manager” helps future leaders to clearly see how they make decisions, solve problems and manage complex situations, so that they can know themselves better, and be themselves in the leadership role.
The MBS Global EMBA programme aims to build great business leaders for the future. From course structure to time schedule, it is all carefully and scientifically designed to do so. Download the Global EMBA brochure here if you would like to know more about MBS Global EMBA programme.

Everyone is dealing with data in our daily life, and we are all part of it. There are millions of apps available to keep us occupied, and with a smart phone, we can almost do anything and everything. Research shows that almost 600 million people are using webchat, which means almost one out of two people in China are in this big data. No matter if you are aware of it or not, the Big Data Era is here, and we are all contributing greatly to it.
If you would like to succeed in this big data era, Patrick pointed out, you can’t do the traditional Chinese leadership style, and judge the situation by your personal “feelings”. You must know how to collect data and analyze it. Patrick used some well-known social events as examples to illustrate why big data analysis is important. For example Oscars, professional level football games, social entertainment TV programme like “I am a singer”, their success is based on accurate data analysis. And not only big data is valued in the entertainment industry, politicians and business people also can’t ignore the major influence of it. Patrick said, for business, data is the foundation of marketing, it drives marketing to be more strategic.
At the end of his presentation, Patrick introduced a data APP named FIDEA, which can generate first-hand consumer data from all open platforms and utilize it through data analysis and mining.
Sherry Fu, Regional Director of Manchester Business School, closed the event with a question about Patrick’s MBA study experience. Patrick commented that this experience changed his career fundamentally. Not only he learned big picture of running a business, including functions like operation, finance, marketing, risk management which are all crucial knowledge for a leader, but also he established loads of useful contacts for his future career. It is something must to be considered by an ambitious business people.
