Welcome Speech

At the ceremony, Ms. Sherry Fu, Founding Director of UoM China Centre, introduced the background and concept of creating a low-carbon office, as well as University’s commitment and actions in ESG. She pointed out that The University of Manchester is a global leader in carbon neutrality. It is the only university in the UK that considers social responsibility as a strategic core goal and is committed to becoming a sustainable university, pledging to become carbon neutral by 2038. The University of Manchester has implemented a series of emission reduction actions globally, such as joining the UN Race to Zero Climate for Universities and College, achieving a 37% reduction in emissions in 2021, committing to transition to 100% renewable energy, joining CPPA from April 2023, and developing energy-saving plans. She stated that UoM China Centre will continue to contribute to sustainable development, actively respond to Earth Day's call, and protect the Earth.

Next, she mentioned the reasons for creating a low-carbon office. The following is an excerpt from her speech:

"The issue of global warming cannot be ignored. As an institution committed to sustainable development, we hope to contribute to the environmental protection cause by building a low-carbon office. We actively respond to the national goal of achieving carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060, and pay attention to employee health, enhance employee happiness, and focus on sustainable development. Therefore, we have adopted a series of low-carbon technologies and design concepts, such as energy-saving lamps, maintenance of green plants, low-carbon promotion, etc., to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption.”
