Conference Review | MA Educational Leadership in Practice

Sherry Fu, Founding Director of UoM China Centre welcomed the new students online

On 15 - 17 March 2022, The University of Manchester China Centre held the first academic conference for the new students of the Part-time MA Educational Leadership in Practice course. Due to recent outbreaks of covid, students e-met their industrial peers online, and connected with academics in Manchester via livestreaming.

Ms. Sherry Fu, Founding Director of UoM China Centre welcomed the new students at the beginning, and introduced the highlights of the University as well as the China Centre. She also warmly invited the students to visit the upgraded China Centre when it resumes offline operation.

The conference introduced the units and theories that students would be studying over the coming months, includingModels of Educational Leadership, Leadership and School Improvement, Educational Leadership in the digital future, The social science of Educational Leadership, etc. By the means of case studies and group discussion, students explored the emerging themes in Educational Leadership in Practice.

Local Expert Industry Insights Sharing

David Ingram, Founding Head of Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi

shared his insights of educational leadership online

Apart from the academic conference, China Centre also invited senior international education expert, Mr. David Ingram, founding Head of College at Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi, for an online masterclass themed Leadership Constants at a Time of Change.

Mr. Ingram first shared his inspiration of being an educator, by reviewing his education background and career path in international education sector.

On top of that, Mr. Ingram introduced leadership constants in rapidly changing industrial environment, via the aspects of "pedagogy", "people" and "(yourself as a) person". From the understanding of effective education to tips of prioritizing daily schedule, Mr. Ingram not only brought enlightening concepts and precise interpretation of leading roles’ responsibilities, but also provided practical takeaways for current and future educational leaders to make impact on school culture, to build up a collaborative team, to encourage team members and even to manage themselves.

Through this 3-day intensive virtual conference, students of MA Educational Leadership in Practice course had a chance to brainstorm and discuss with world leading Manchester academics as well as industrial peers among different cutting-edge topics.

In parallel with a true “Manchester classroom”, they could also be truly benefited from the value-added industry sharing session. Relied on the China Centre’s decades of endeavor in the region, the students would have the opportunities to connect with local experts, as well as refresh their mindsets with first-hand, practical industrial insights.
