On the evening of September 29, 2020, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Manchester, held a unique online event for alumni in China, shared how the University responded to the crisis and the latest developments in Manchester, as well as the University’s continued work with China in business, public authorities and students. Leading a virtual walk into the brand new China Centre, Mrs Sherry Fu, the founding Director of the University of Manchester China Centre, thanked all alumni for support and offered a peek into the new site. Professor Dame Nancy congratulated on the new era of the University of Manchester China Centre, which represents a clear realisation of the University’s commitment to people, and to nurturing new talent. Joining them in Congratulating the new China Centre at the special event is Professor Markos Zachariadis, the newly-appointed Greensill Chair in Fintech at the Alliance Manchester Business School, who spoke about the future of FinTech at The University of Manchester. The talk attracted over 600 audiences and drew many questions from alumni. Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell reassured that the University will continue to support various sorts of activities for students and alumni and will try however we can to make sure that students coming to Manchester will have a positive experience and make friends whether they are joining us in person, or online at first. Professor Markos Zachariadis discussed about on the role of data and Fintech in sustainable development, particularly in Asia, elaborating on the example that rural China has seen improved access to service for people to create an “internet of value”.
