"Hello Everyone,

It seems every month is so fruitful in Spring. Last weekend, I was so delighted to hear that MBS student delegates got the 3rd prize award at the China MBA healthcare industry business innovation competition held at China European Business School. The competition is very fierce and participants for the final are all from the top Chinese business schools including PKU, Tsinghua, Zhejiang University and CEIBS. Many congratulations-Yunfei Zhang, Shirley Lai, Regina Yu, David Xu!!

Another piece of great news is MBS China centre has development a new online internal communication platform: http://admin.mbs.ac.cn/bbs for our Global MBA students. Different intakes students now can share their learning tips, experiences, professional development, interesting stories etc. This application is especially designed for China centre students, which allows our students to manage their own threads and can post notice or articles. With known web component embedded, user can upload rich content, like emotional icon and large pictures. The most important function of this application however is that students can easily locate any categories that they want to explore, such as students’ intakes, alumni clubs, students events etc.

How to log in China centre BBS? Key your university central username (mzy…) as user name and your student number is the password. Hope you enjoy this new communicational platform. If you have any good suggestions, please feel free to let our IT talent Mr. Tony Huang know!

Global EMBA Thought Leaders Talk launched
On 25th March, Manchester Business School China Centre launched its 1st GEMBA Thought Leaders Talk series event, Beyond Digital Marketing, presented by Dr. Feng Xi, Senior Vice President of Horizon Research Consultancy Group and President of Hi-GDP.

On 25th March, Manchester Business School China Centre launched its 1st GEMBA Thought Leaders Talk series event, Beyond Digital Marketing, presented by Dr. Feng Xi, Senior Vice President of Horizon Research Consultancy Group and President of Hi-GDP.

Dr. Feng started his presentation by sharing successful stories of some famous Chinese brands, as well as failure of some brands which used to be so well-known but now forgotten and disappeared from the market. Followed those stories, Dr. Feng leaded the audience to think about some recently hot cases like WeChat’s success again Weibo, competition of Didi and Kuaidi (嘀嘀打车VS快的打车), and why lucky money is more than lucky money. He also shared an inspirational case of a new brand Diao Ye Niu Nan (雕爷牛腩), how they used digital marketing to promote their brand and gain customer loyalty.   

At the end of his presentation, Dr. Feng summaried that, to customers, fun is everything and less is more. Make your produce easy to use, understand your customer, engage with them and respond quickly. Those are key points to lead your business to success. And last but not least Business mind in this digital era is a MUST.



This 1st GEMBA event successfully attracted almost 30 people in the room. It was very interactive with many questions raised during Dr. Feng’s presentation leading to several rounds of short discussions. Not only there was audience from Shanghai, but also this was the 1st time MBS China Centre tried to broadcast its event live to allow students in Beijing, Chengdu and other China regions to benefit from it.


Ms. Sherry Fu, Regional Director of MBS China Centre closed the event and introduced GEMBA programme to the audience with great passion!

Sherry said, the Manchester Business School Global Executive MBA is distinctive, challenging and inspirational. The programme balances academic rigor with getting out in the real world to try ideas and critique current practices, aiming to get the delegates get ready to be international business leaders. We encourage business people with over 8 years’ professional experience, a minimum 5 years in leadership roles to apply for our GEMBA programme.

On 18th March 2014, Manchester Business School hosted the Brand Development Innovation Seminar at its China Centre, co-organised by Shanghai Brand Development Working Committee and People’s Daily.

MBS has the honour to welcome decision makers from many well-known Chinese brands e.g. Yongjiu bicycle, Butterfly sewing machine, Zheng Guanghe drinking water, Mali painting material, Hong Fushi home textile from different industry backgrounds with almost 30 guests in the room.

Distinguished guest speaker Mr. Yangxu, VP of Junhe Consulting Group shared his expertise regarding how companies develop its brand to boost corporate growth, and what opportunities and challenges corporate are facing. He also emphasized how important it is to understand consumers especially youth consumers which are the key group to catch, and how crucial to gain the trust and loyalty from consumers. The seminar was extremely interactive and everyone enjoyed their time at MBS China Centre.



The aim of MBS China Centre is to provide students in China top level MBA, DBA and EMBA programme, for them to reach elite education opportunities. Ms. Sherry Fu, Regional Director, MBS China said MBS will continuously support Shanghai local companies on their brand building and we would love to see famous old Shanghainese brands to develop and expand internationally in the near future.
MBS China and FESCO Adecco Staff Strengthen Relationship
Ms. Sherry Fu, Regional Director of Manchester Business School was invited to FESCO Adecco and meeting with Mr. Ying Ni, CEO of the company. Both sides deeply discussed the cooperation about talent development and related activities.

FESCO Adecco is a joint venture company between FESCO, one of the leading HR services companies in China, and Adecco the worldwide HR services leader, to provide the most comprehensive professional HR services including staffing, outsourcing and recruitment to our clients.

Both sides deeply discussed the cooperation about talent development. MBS China centre offers great support to FESCO Adecco, who wants to develop senior management people to be more internationally competitive.  Leaders of two sides have expressed confidence to guild up good relationship.

Followed, a Global MBA information session was held in the conference room of the company, around 40 staff attended, who all worked more 7 years for its company and now positioned in high management level.  FESCO Adecco will send qualified staff to GMBA programme to MBS for further development. One week later, the first group of candidates will visit MBS China centre and learn the application process.

Lean Innovation lectutre delivered by William Yu
Innovation is important into a company, while competition comes to a critical stage in all industries. Against this background, on 8th April, Global EMBA Thought Leaders Talk ‘Eight Steps of Lean Innovation ‘was held at MBS China Centre. William Yu, Senior VP of Allegion Plc & President of Allegion Asia Pacific was invited to introduce a newly developed systematic and repeatable approach to bring innovation to next level.

Innovation is important into a company, while competition comes to a critical stage in all industries. Against this background, on 8th April, Global EMBA Thought Leaders Talk ‘Eight Steps of Lean Innovation ‘was held at MBS China Centre. William Yu, Senior VP of Allegion Plc & President of Allegion Asia Pacific was invited to introduce a newly developed systematic and repeatable approach to bring innovation to next level.

The lecture gathered around 40 people, including senior management people from various industries such as finance, consulting, pharmaceutical and manufactures.


William joined Ingersoll Rand in 1997. Until November 31, 2013, he was the President of Security Technologies of Ingersoll Rand Asia Pacific and the Dean of Ingersoll Rand Safety and Security Institute. Prior to joining Ingersoll Rand, William spent 12 years in a large state-owned enterprise and local public company and also gained overseas experience by working in the U.S. and Singapore. The cross-cultural working experience and western perspectives enabled him to accumulate a broad spectrum of experiences from business strategy, operation management, marketing & sales to supply chain management. 


First, William illustrated the delimitation of Lean Innovation and the reasons why it is important to a company. Followed, showcasing some classic cases, he provided practical tips to solve the real innovation challenges which faced by current institutions includes GE, Allegion and Cirque du Soleil.


In short, Eight Steps of Lean Innovation consists of 1) makingInnovation Strategy, 2) Segmentation, 3) Understanding Customer’s Needs, 4) Determining Opportunity, 5) Generating Ideas, 6) Evaluating Ideas, 7) Executing Ideas, and finally building up 8) Innovation Culture


During the Q&A session, participants heated discussions on a wide range of creative problem solving and its generating way.

Accounting in Business
26th March, Prof.  John Brophy delivered a workshop taster to Global MBA hot prospective students in China Centre. The lecture provided a conceptual framework for the evaluation of company financial reports, analysing the impact of regulation, managerial motivation and economic consequences on the credibility and usefulness of published financial reports. During this session, Prof. John Brophy shared the most up-to-date theories and cases concerning how Management Accounting could be in a fast Changing Environment and was highly received by the audience.

Negotiation Skills and Selling Strategies
9 April 2014, more than 50 candidates attended Global MBA workshop taster delivered by Prof. Francis Chittenden. The topic ‘Negotiation Skills and Selling Strategies’ is quite popular and attracts sales people from different industry including Finance, Retail, Pharmaceuticals and Industrial Goods. Prof. Francis illustrated the specialized vocabulary, shared the power tool kit. Followed live negotiation case was discussed together with the technique. Audience all enjoyed the lecture and made Q&A session last 30 minutes.

Chris Gamett visited Shanghai and delivered Career Workshop
The Career Workshop 'Navigating the job market, a holistic approach for time poor professionals' was led by Mr Chris Garnett, the Head of Postgraduate Careers & Employability of Manchester Business School on 6 March at China Centre.  This workshop focused on the challenges faced by busy professionals who want to focus on making their next career move but have difficulty finding the time to focus on their job search. Students and alumni gave very positive feedback and interacted with Chris extremely active. The Q&A session after the presentation was lasted more than one hour.

Champions English
Manchester Business School Alumni John Macaulay (MBA 2010) called into MBS China centre in Shanghai recently to tell us all about his new business, a summer camp in Manchester, which teaches students English through football.

Manchester Business School Alumni John Macaulay (MBA 2010) called into MBS China centre in Shanghai recently to tell us all about his new business, a summer camp in Manchester, which teaches students English through football.


'Champions English' is currently recruiting Chinese teenagers who he claims will 'learn English faster through football. 'English lessons, taught by star teachers, will use the theme of football to make the learning process fun and the afternoons will involve football and lifestyle training with a UEFA Qualified coach who works with Manchester City FC.


Other activities on the 2 week summer school include behind the scenes stadium tours to Manchester United FC and Manchester City FC, trips to historic cities such as Chester and Liverpool and beautiful countryside.
