UoM China Centre Empowers British Schools in China with UN Sustainable Development Goals

Recently, The University of Manchester China Centre is honoured to receive an appreciation video from Jo Hawley, the British Consul-General of Guangzhou, for the Centre’s contribution in supporting the sustainable development of British schools in China, and continuous efforts in bringing prestigious British education to working professions in the region.

On 5 November 2021, the British Schools Awards concluded with receptions in both Beijing and Guangzhou to announce the winners. These receptions included speeches from the British Ambassador Caroline Wilson, British Consul-General of Guangzhou Jo Hawley (patron of the British School Awards) and two UK ministers.

The University of Manchester China Centre is proud to sponsor the Students for Sustainability Award, which is in recognition of the best student sustainability project that truly showcases the students’ innovative thought, design skills and true understanding of the impact sustainability projects have on our environment and communities.

Just as acted as the exclusive Academic Supporter for Sustainability and ESG Summit 2021 delivered by British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai, UoM China Centre has always been actively promoting sustainable development and advocating UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In the year of 2021, The University of Manchester has been named the World’s 1st University in the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings, topped the table of more than 1,200 universities from 98 countries and regions on actions taken towards the UN’s SDGs.

Ms. Sherry Fu, Founding Director of UoM China Centre was invited to lead the judging panel of the Students for Sustainability Award, and presented the trophy to the winner. She mentioned that quite many great applications have been received this year. Being the leading judge for this award, herself and other panelists were all impressed by the presented projects that really get students involved into sustainability. Also, what’s even more significant is the sense of pride in improving sustainable development that has been built in our younger generation’s awareness through daily practice.

Congratulations to the three great finalists - Cogdel Cranleigh School Changsha, Horrow International School Shanghai, and Malvern College Chengdu. Congratulations to the winner - Malvern College Chengdu! We are delighted to see new ideas, actions and cooperation inspired by this cheering award, and will continuously raise awareness of the role of higher education in addressing the social responsibility.
