On the afternoon of 5th November, the marketing club of the University of Manchester Alumni Association organized a retailing event at THE INLET,and invited our alumni to participate in a "zero waste" creative workshop organized by SAFONE.

Located at the intersection of Sichuan Road N. and Wujin Road, The INLET is a complex comprising eight lanes that connect 60 shikumen (stone-gate) houses and eight independent 100-year-old constructions. After a series of renovations, the complex has retained its historical flavor and has become a new attraction on an old commercial street.

Mr. Litao YU, senior director of Chongbang Group, showed Ms. Sherry FU, Founding Director of the University of Manchester China Centre, and other alumni around THE INLET, visiting some featured workshops, galleries, art education centres, bars and fashion boutiques to fully understand the past and present of this area and to discover the stories behind it.

Followed by the guided company tour, Ms. Sherry FU, Founding Director of UoM China Centre delivered an opening speech. She gave a brief review of UoM China Centre and our social responsibility progress. Fu addressed that UoM is among the top UK universities internationally recognised on Impact (Times Higher Education Impact Rankings) and unique in British higher education in having social responsibility as one of three core strategic goals, sitting equally alongside its commitments to research, world-class teaching and learning. Established in 2008, as the first UK university to open a dedicated Executive Centre in Shanghai, UoM China Centre’s social responsibility activities capture a unique Manchester spirit, motivating communities for social and economic well-being and cultivating talents by supporting the portfolio of UoM’s Global MBA programmes and part-time industry-based Master courses in China. After almost 15 years of endeavour, China Centre is highly respected in the field of Sino-UK educational and cultural exchanges and cooperation.

UoM China Centre also makes efforts to develop the people-to-people diplomatic platform to advance cultural knowledge, nationally and internationally, where a larger impact in people-to-people diplomacy could be made possible through a stronger cross-cultural link.

Afterwards, Mr. Litao YU, senior director of Chongbang Group shared the original intention to build up THE INLET——to let the old compound reborn as a modern cultural venue, and to compel whole neighborhoods of this city into our brave new civilized commercialized century.

At the end of the event, Aileen WEI, GMBA Alumnus of UoM, Founder of Zero Waste Beauty & SAFONE invited our alumni to participate in a "zero waste" creative workshop, transforming waste into art.

The event was unanimously appreciated by the participating alumni for its significance either from the perspective of understanding the history of downtown Shanghai or from the eco-friendly and sustainable concept that 'transforming waste into art' showed. UoM China Centre will continue to organize amazing events for alumni and encourage them to practice the concept of sustainable development.
