UoM China Centre hosted 2021 Summer Graduation Reception

On 22nd July 2021, The University of Manchester China Centre hosted graduation reception for Manchester Global MBA graduates. The event was held with a “blended” approach by having an offline event in China Centre joined by Ms. Sherry Fu, The University’s China Centre Director and Ms. Gill Caldicott, Director East China, British Council, with a virtual graduation ceremony livestreaming on the main campus in Manchester.


On behalf of China Centre, Sherry Fu gave a welcome speech and highlighted, “We are very delighted and honoured to witness the successful MBA completion of 102 new graduates here in China. What makes me feel more proud is our students has achieved a remarkable academic performance, of which 9 new graduates has achieved “distinction” whilst 90 new graduates achieved “merit”. Although the MBA study journey must have been challenging for all of you, I believed what you have learnt through the journey would help you to further transform into global business leaders of excellence in the post-pandemic era.”

She continued, “The University of Manchester is ranked at 27th worldwide in overall (QS Ranking 2022) and 1st globally in social impact by THE Impact Rankings 2021. As the alumni of UoM, you should not only be proud of what the University has achieved but also taking on more social responsibility such as global sustainability development, environment protection and business ethics.”

During the event, Ms. Gill Caldicott, Director East China, British Council was invited to deliver a keynote speech at China Centre. Firstly she sent her warmest congratulations to the new graduates of Manchester Global MBA.

She then introduced the long-term collaboration between the British Council and China, and pointed out: "It is a great honour for the British Council to support the Alliance Manchester Business School’s MBA curriculum to enter China. And it is such a fortunate to witness the development of the China Centre during the past 13 years. " She mentioned, British Council shares the same commitment as China Centre which is to promote the global development of higher education. She believes that cultural and educational exchanges can create opportunities, build trust and mutual-understanding, and that education and culture is the bridge connecting global citizens of the world. Finally, Ms. Gill encouraged the graduates to actively participate in the international alumni community and jointly promote the future development of UK-China relations.


In the recognition of graduates’ outstanding academic achievements, Ms. Sherry Fu awarded the certificates to the nine distinction graduates, who were also interviewed to share their experiences and challenges during studies.

Some graduates brought their family and friends to celebrate this remarkable moment with them.

During the ceremony, graduates had the chance to wear the complete academic dress from the University of Manchester, leaving their precious graduation memories with the University Logo in the front entrance as well as the Nobel Wall at the Centre.


During the virtual graduation ceremony, the new graduates were joined by Dame Professor Nancy Rothwell, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Manchester, and Mr. Xavier Duran, Director of MBA Programmes, Alliance Manchester Business School. Professor Rothwell and Mr. Xavier recognized all the hard work and achievements of the students and strongly believed that all the graduates will get a fruitful and bright future in return.

The University of Manchester has the largest global alumni network in the UK with nearly 500,000 alumni from more than 190 countries. After shifting from “students” to “alumni”, we believe the graduates continuously make contribution to the society as a global citizen.
