Director's Message

2021 is about to close with the approaching of Christmas. This year remains complex and uncertain under the ongoing impact of global pandemic, while we would like to share with you some of our highlights.

 

Thanks to the great support from Dame Professor Nancy Rothwell, President of the University of Manchester, we’ve had a chance to host an unforgettable Graduation Celebration in Shenzhen,China for all the 2021 Chinese graduates of the UoM. Whilst the travel restriction kept the students away from visiting Manchester Campus, the China Centre will stand with them as always and act as a warm home.

 

This year, we’ve also had a series of informative and inspiring events. As an advocacy to the University’s core strategic goal in Social Responsibility, we’ve been continuously leading and participating in SDGs events in China, with a wild range of focuses including ESG, Students for Sustainability, Women Leadership and etc. In the meantime, with more UoM part-time master courses set sail via China Centre, we are extremely proud for keep bringing prestigious British tertiary education to working professionals in diverse industries in China.

 

While having farewell to 2021, we are sincerely looking forward to a brand new 2022 that full of transformations, challenges, and great opportunities. Together with all China Centre staff, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our students, alumni and partners for another spectacular year.

The University of Manchester Class of 2021 Graduation Celebration Held in China

14th of December is an unforgettable day for all the 2021 Chinese graduates of the University of Manchester. More than 200 fresh graduates from Greater China Region gathered together to celebrate their graduation in Shenzhen, China. More than 4,000 graduates and their parents and friends joined live-streaming ceremony. Ms Sherry Fu, joined by senior officers from China Centre and more than 20 distinguished guests and alumni joined the celebration in Shenzhen.

A Grand Graduation Party for Global MBA Students Hosted in UoM China Centre

On 22 December 2021, the University of Manchester China Centre hosted a grand graduation reception - inviting the Class of 2021 Global MBA Graduates to gather at the Centre and connecting them with Manchester through the upgraded video conferencing system.

During the reception, graduates had the chance to wear the complete academic dress that China Centre ordered from the University of Manchester, leaving their precious graduation memories with the University Logo in the front entrance as well as the Nobel Wall at the Centre.

Third Magnificent Culture (Mculture) - Jiaxing  Cultural Tour for Foreign Friends Won SORSA Outstanding Projects on People-to-people Diplomacy Activities

On 18 Dec 2021,Shanghai Overseas Returned Scholars Association (SORSA) hosted an Annual Review Meeting for Research Centre and People-to-people Diplomacy Activites. UoM Alumni Association won SORSA Outstanding Projects on People-to-people Diplomacy Activities, for  its Third Magnificent Culture (Mculture)  Project - Jiaxing  Cultural Tour for Foreign Friends.

Ms. Sherry Fu, Founding director of UoM China Centre,Standing Committee Member of SORSA, Vice President and Secretary General of SORSA UoM Alumni Association was invited to present and share her experience in sketching, operating such a big scale event, as well as the core value behind of developing a people-to-people diplomatic platform to advance cultural exchange,to let the world know more Chinese stories.

UoM China Centre Empowers British Schools in China with UN Sustainable Development Goals

Recently, The University of Manchester China Centre is honoured to receive an appreciation video from Jo Hawley, the British Consul-General of Guangzhou, for the Centre’s contribution in supporting the sustainable development of British schools in China, and continuous efforts in bringing prestigious British education to working professions in the region.

On 5 November 2021, the British Schools Awards concluded with receptions in both Beijing and Guangzhou to announce the winners. These receptions included speeches from the British Ambassador Caroline Wilson, British Consul-General of Guangzhou Jo Hawley (patron of the British School Awards) and two UK ministers. 

The University of Manchester China Centre is proud to sponsor the Students for Sustainability Award, which is in recognition of the best student sustainability project that truly showcases the students’ innovative thought, design skills and true understanding of the impact sustainability projects have on our environment and communities.

UoM Leading the World on Sustainable Development

On 9 September 2021, the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai (BritCham Shanghai) held its inaugural Sustainability and ESG Summit 2021, themed ‘Let’s make our future together’, at Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai.

Head of China Office of UN Global Compact Ms Meng Liu, British Consul-General Shanghai Chris Wood, and BritCham Shanghai Chair Ray Chisnall attended and delivered speeches at the Summit. Managing Director of China Centre, the University of Manchester Ms Sherry Fu attended the Summit featured six keynote speeches and four panel discussions with nearly 30 speakers. COP26 High Level Champion Nigel Topping, and Global CEO of Unilever Alan Jope, both sent over video messages.

UoM was invited to share experience in blended learning for China Annual Conference for International Education & Expo

As a part of China Annual Conference for International Education & Expo, the UK-China Higher Education Workshop – Blended Teaching and Learning was successfully hosted in Beijing on 21 Oct 2021, attracting more than 100 representatives from Chinese and British universities.

Ms. Sherry Fu, Director of UoM China Centre was invited to attend the workshop as the guest speaker of roundtable discussion, to share her insights on Blended Learning with senior government officials and experts from HE institutions from China and the UK.

Local Conference Hosted for MA Educational Leadership in Practice

On 28-30 September 2021, the University of Manchester China Centre held the second academic conference for the students of the part-time MA Educational Leadership in Practice course. During the three-day conference, the upgraded China Centre delivered a blended approach by having an enriched physical “classroom” in parallel with a live virtual element connecting directly with the academics in Manchester. 

In additional to the academic conference, China Centre invited senior education expert, Ms. Maxine Lu, General Principal of Shanghai Xiehe Education Center. Ms. Lu shared with the students her thoughts on “the Reflection on the Integration of Eastern and Western Education”. The session was also held in blended format, with face-to-face interaction and livestreaming.

China Centre Awarded Global Talent Development Star Institution

From 8th to 9th December, the 9th Tencent Business School Development Forum was successfully held online.

The University of Manchester China Centre, has won the award of "Global Talent Development Star Institution of the year of 2021", which is undoubtedly a recognition of its contribution to the promotion of higher education and business exchanges between China and the UK in the past thirteen years. Ms. Sherry Fu, Founding Director of UoM China Centre has been recognized with award “China Business Education Influencer of the year of 2021”.

UoM China Centre Finance Insight: Company Visit to Panlin Capital
 

In the afternoon of 10th December, The University of Manchester China Centre, alongside PANLIN CAPITAL, a Top 100 Best China Venture VC firm has brought powerful ideas and original thinking in a Finance Insight session to take an in-depth look at venture capital and boutique investment.

During the session, Mr. LI YUHUI, Founding Managing Partner and Chairman of PANLIN shared his insightful understanding of “boutique investing” and Panlin’s investment practice focusing on technology and innovation.

Manchester Global MBA Sports Mini Camp and Alumni Networking
 

On 5th December afternoon, UoM China Centre the first Manchester Movement Sports Camp collaborating with Orangetheory Fitness. During the event, Manchester Global MBA alumni, Jan. 2022 new intake students and perspective candidates joined the session for a group-based workout. Also, alumni representatives shared their study journey at the University.

Forum on Educational Leadership and International Education Held in Changsha
 

On 26 – 27 November, in late autumn of Changsha city, a delegation from The University of Manchester China Centre had a fruitful dialogue with local headmasters and experts in international education industry.

On 26 November, upon the warm welcome from headmaster Mr. Adam McRoy, Ms. Sherry Fu, Director of the UoM China Centre visited the Cogdel Cranleigh International School in Changsha.  In the afternoon of 27 November, UoM China Centre has invited Ms. Sharon Wang, Deputy Director of Changsha Lushan Sino-Canadian School, together with Mr. Adam McRoy and Ms. Sherry Fu to deliver an industry roundtable that focuse on international education in Changsha.

Study Tips and Experience Sharing Session
 

On the evening of 25th August, China Centre Student Support Team invited Mr Andy Qi, Distinction Graduate of the Year 2020 and Ms Constance Chen, Distinction Graduate of the Year 2021 to share their study tips and experience in the MBA journey. Apart from sharing valuable courses in their eyes, Andy and Constance also stressed the importance of making correct reference and talked about how to achieve balance among study, work, personal well-being and family responsibilities in two years.

UoM China Centre Signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement with Manbing Techonology
 

On 10 Dec, 2021, Ms. Sherry Fu, Director of UoM Chinae Centre hosted a delegation from Manbing Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. to visit the Centre. The delegation was led by Dr. Bing Sun, Founder and CEO of Manbing Techology, who is also a outstanding alumnus of The university of Manchester, with a PHD of Planning & Environmental Management.

 

After the graduation from SEED UoM, Dr. Sun and his Manbing Technology dedicated to construct a digital industrial platform, with a focus on carbon neutral. To advocate the University's commitment in UN's sustainable development and its core strategic goal in Social Responsibility, UoM China Centre signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement with Manbing Techonology, with a target of comprehensively contribute in sustainable development, as well as build a Sino-British bridge for national "carbon peak and neutrality" strategy.

Alumni Event | Swap Party for Sustainability
 

In the afternoon of 23rd Oct., The University of Manchester China Centre hosted a swap party for the alumni communities. It was a great chance for us to get rid of those stuff we don't need in a sustainable way. Everyone who joined the party brought 1-3 old items and successfully found them a new home.  Moderated by UoM alumna Aileen, Two KOL guest speakers shared inspiring thoughts on sustainability and sustainable lifestyle.
