On 6th September 2017, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, FRS, President and Vice-Chancellor, hosted Shenzhen alumni dinner to mark her second visit of the year to China where not long ago she hosted another well-received alumni dinner in Beijing. More than 200 alumni and their guests from around China gathered at reunion and networked with friends old and new.

Accompanied the president are UoM delegates including Mr. Richard Cotton ,Director of Student Recruitment and International Development, Ms. Kate White, Director of Division of Development and Alumni Relations, Ms. Christina Siu and Ms. Sherry Fu from the UoM worldwide centres, Mr. Markus Karlsson-Jones, Global Volunteer and Networks Officer, and distinguished faculty members from various research centres and departments.

Alumni representatives, Ms. Nicole Qin and Mr. Jie Fu, from the Guangdong Branch, China Alumni Association opened the evening. Ms. Christina Siu, Director of University of Manchester East Asia Centre welcomed the attending guests.

Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell appreciated the presence of all the distinguished speakers, UoM representation, alumni and guests and expressed her excitement to see the Chinese alumni growing in size and depth of involvement in business and social activities. Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell envisioned a bright and promising prospect of University’s collaborations with China and shared with all the exciting developments taking place at the University.

Ms. Sherry Fu, Director of the University of Manchester China Centre delivered a speech, introducing the China Centre and UoM Shanghai alumni association and jointly launched “Alumni Fund Me” project which is initiated by Ms. Jiajia Liu, Lecturer in Asian Business and Organisation Studies, AMBS.


Ms. Yingxiu Chen, secretary general of the Committee, China Alumni Association Guangdong Branch, outlined the developments of the regional chapter and anticipated another year of expanding community of alumni.

As Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell emphasized in her opening speech, the University of Manchester highly regards for alumni relations. With 4,500 Chinese students on campus in Manchester - nearly half of all international students at Manchester, and 14,000 alumni in China - the highest number of alumni in any country outside the UK, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell’s visits to China demonstrate a strong commitment to China, the world's largest emerging economy, and more importantly to a much healthy and developing Chinese alumni community of the University of Manchester.
