From 28th February to 2nd March 2021, the welcome event and the first fieldtrip of MSc International Fashion Marketing (IFM) online and blended learning course were hosted by The University of Manchester China Centre. As the first online and blended learning course which The University of Manchester Worldwide launched the 1st cohort out of the UK, the launch of MSc IFM online and blended learning course marks another milestone of The University of Manchester China Centre.

The new students of Feb. 2021 intake are currently working in industries such as luxury, beauty, retail, finance, public relations and e-commerce, with an average working experience of 7 years. These elites are from well-known companies such as Grand Ocean, Londee, Miskie, Garena, Atelier I-N-D-J and etc.

These elites are based in United Kingdom, France, Switzerland and China who are based in different cities such as London, Poisy, Pregassona, Shanghai, Beijing, Changsha and Fuzhou. The blended learning method from The University of Manchester allows the working professionals to start their study journey from all over the world. In order to secure the student experience for every new student, we invited the students who could not physically attend the face-to-face fieldtrip to join us live online.

On 28th February, Ms. Sherry Fu, Founding Director of The University of Manchester China Centre, welcomed the students both online and offline with special welcome remarks, “Welcome, all new students! Your peers are highly diverse in terms of industry background and nationalities, and I believe that the next two years will be challenging and meaningful for all of you. As a pioneer in online education and blended learning teaching method, the University of Manchester has been committed to providing diverse educational opportunities for industry elites around the world, and the China Centre is proud to witness the successful launch of MSc IFM online and blended learning course.”

Accordingly, Dr. Delia Vazquez, Course Director of MSc IFM online and blended learning course, delivered a course overview to all new students, followed by an introduction to CIM accreditation from the lecturer Dr. Barbara Waters.

In the evening, the graduates of MSc International Fashion Marketing/Retailing full-time course joined the alumni networking event and e-meet Dr. Delia Vazquez. It was a great opportunity for the new students to mingle with the graduates and developed industry links.

Alumni Networking

The fieldtrip creates an opportunity for the students to work on group projects on selected brands. On 1st March, Dr. Vazquez briefed the themes and tasks for each group by a recorded video, the students then went to L’avenue and THE PLACE to visit different brand’s offline stores including Dior, Zara and Burberry.

On 2nd March, Mr. George Liu, the Founder of Silky Elite gave a keynote speech on fashion sustainability, domestic and overseas fashion manufacturing, aesthetic lifestyle and Chinese cultural derivatives. Mr. Liu noted that fashion sustainability had become a serious issue in recent years. Chemical fiber or polyester products are largely produced which led to a major challenge of degradation. It is common for many factories in South East Asia to discharge the wastewater directly into the ocean; in contrast, some factories in Italy and France introduced a concept of “kitchen” where they have a space to handle printing and dyeing tidily.

Build up industry links

Mr. Liu then shared his understanding of the modern aesthetic way of life. He believes that the young generation in China is leading the domestic fashion trend – they tend to have a relatively high demand for comfort and quality life, which is largely related to the era they grew up and live in. “Cultures have always been blended, such as the Mogao Grotto murals can be found in many European designed patterns, " Mr. Liu added.

The new students are quite inspired by the field trip experience --- truely blended journey!
