Event Review | Panel on Educational Leadership in Guangzhou

In the afternoon of Saturday 24 September, Ms. Sherry Fu, Founding director of The University of Manchester China Centre joined a panel discussion on Educational Leadership in Guangzhou with current students of UoM MA Educational Leadership in Practice Course and alumni of Global pat-time MBA programme. The event attracted Principals, head of HR, and teachers from multiple international schools and education groups.

During the penal, Mr. Imran Ali-Farzal, Executive International Headmaster & International Headmaster of High School of Huanggang Middle School Education Group Guangzhou, compared the differences in the development of international education in Guangzhou and in other first-tier cities from the perspectives of parent mindsets, market environment, and policy support. Mr. Daniel Xuan, Principal of Centro Education International, summarized the development of international education - study abroad sector by reviewing the paths of thousands of students he helped over the past 15 years. Mr. Colby Hazouri, Vice President of Blue Valley Education Group, focused on the challenges international schools faced and the corresponding solutions in the selection of curriculum pathway and international talent recruitment and retention. Mr. Robert Yang, Assistant to President & General Manager of Operation of Lingnan Group, emphasized on the significance of leadership in building up a dynamic team and individual career promotion, from the perspective of a senior manager.

Apart from the industrial insights, guest speakers consistently mentioned how the Master course improved their understanding of educational leadership from "Transactional Leadership" to "Transformational Leadership", the course not only enlightened students on what kind of leaders they should be, but also guided them to build intellectual and practical confidence in all interactions with teachers, parents, students, managers, board members and policymakers.

As professionals with full-load work commitment, the students also shared how they benefited from blended learning format in post-pandemic era. During the sharing session, Ms. Fu introduced the practice of the University of Manchester, who pioneered to establish global centres, develop online and blended learning system, and break the barriers to bring premium learning opportunities to the whole world.
