Event Review | Forum on Educational Leadership and International Education Held in Changsha

On 26 – 27 November, in late autumn of Changsha city, a delegation from The University of Manchester China Centre had a fruitful dialogue with local headmasters and experts in international education industry.

On 26 November, upon the warm welcome from headmaster Mr. Adam McRoy, Ms. Sherry Fu, Director of the UoM China Centre visited the Cogdel Cranleigh International School in Changsha. Located in a newly developed area in the city, the School recruited its first intake of students in the fall of 2020. While walking on the beautiful campus, Mr. McRoy introduced how the concept of British style education embodies in the decoration of school, including the curve of corridor, the use of color, and the setting of dormitory etc.

Although Cogdel Cranleigh is an international school with courses structure of A-Level and IB, students could get integrated education from daily practice – Chinese poetry writing, painting of heritage & sightseeing in China, and competition of Chinese geographic knowledge etc.

In addition, what impressed Sherry most was the school's comprehensive promotion of the "sustainable development" for students and teachers. Actually, that’s also the trigger how UoM China Centre met Cogdel Crainleigh School Changsha.


“Student for Sustainability” Project

In the British School Awards 2021, Cogdel Cranleigh School Changsha was nominated as one the finalists for the "Students for Sustainability" Award. As the lead judge of the judging panel, Sherry Fu was deeply impressed by the passionate presentation from the headmaster McRoy and the great actions from Cogdel Cranleigh’s students.

In fact, as a unique tertiary institution in Europe that takes "social responsibility" as its three core strategic goals, UoM has always been committed to achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In the year of 2021, The University of Manchester has been named the World’s 1st University in the Times Higher Education University Impact Ranking, topped the table of more than 1,200 universities from 98 countries and regions.

Industry Roundtable – A Dialogue with Local Experts

In the afternoon of 27 November, UoM China Centre has invited Ms. Sharon Wang, Deputy Director of Changsha Lushan Sino-Canadian School, together with Mr. Adam McRoy and Ms. Sherry Fu to deliver an industry roundtable that focuse on international education in Changsha.

Endeavored in Chinese international education for decades, all three guests shared their experience in establishing and managing international institutions in China. In addition to macro-level observations of the industry, what make the sharing more constructive were their insights from the approach of daily operation with plenty of real examples. With active participation of heads and representatives from international department of multiple well-known local schools, the roundtable raised heated discussion.

During the roundtable, Sharon also shared her learning experience as a current student of UoM part-time MA Educational Leadership in Practice course. On top of building a solid foundation of “Educational Leadership”, she particularly mentioned how the course actually helped her with daily institutional management and individual career development
