Business Insight Event Review| From Outsiders to Insiders

The meteoric rise of the Chinese economy is shocking the entire world. Evolving consumer demand, climate change, disruptive technologies and uncertainty about the global economic recovery are all issues that multi-national companies have to carefully think about and deal with. The local Chinese market has been expanding enormously – especially as its tech and fashion industry continues to thrive.

In the evening of Monday 22nd November, The University of Manchester China Centre has invited Alexander Barton, alumnus of Manchester Global MBA, Managing Director at Intralink and Cedric Devroye, Senior Vice President at United Trademarks Group to share their thoughts and ideas with a focus on "contemporary business in China". This business insight event has attracted more than 100 audiences to register from more than 10 countries worldwide. We handpicked 40 among them to join UoM China Centre, meanwhile, this event was also live-streamed on Tencent Meeting App.

Before we kick off the event, the Managing Director of the University of Manchester China Centre - Mr Sherry Fu welcomed the audience both online and offline with special welcome remarks:

Welcome Speech:

“Welcome to the University of Manchester China Centre. Located at the heart of Shanghai, our China Centre was established in 2008 and is one of the largest overseas centres of The University of Manchester. As a pioneer in online education and blended learning teaching methods, the University of Manchester has been committed to providing diverse educational opportunities for industry elites around the world and the China Centre is proud to bring Manchester Global MBA, Part-time blended courses: MSc International Fashion Marketing, MSc Finance Management and MA Educational Leadership in Practice to China. We have been ranked first in the world in the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings this year and 27th in the world according to the QS World University Rankings® 2021. The University of Manchester has 25 Nobel laureates among its past and present students and staff. In the future, we will continue to be a role model for Sino-British educational and cultural exchange and cooperation., and to cultivate more socially responsible citizens.”

After Ms Sherry’s welcome speech, Alexander Barton, alumnus of Manchester Global MBA, Managing Director at Intralink delivered his industry talk from the perspective of B2B Market Entry in China. He shared some of his clients’ cases and common mistakes and best practices for western firms. Alex then concluded by presenting some of the top challenges for western B2B firms in China and how to cope with these challenges.

Cedric Devroye, Senior Vice President at United Trademarks Group helped us to understand opportunities and challenges with four factors that shape the complex narrative of the transformation: demography, technology, power diffusion and multi-conceptuality.

Everyone in the audience burst into applause at the end of two fantastic keynote speeches from our guest speakers. During the panel discussion, Cedric is quite confident that China will have more high fashion brands in the coming 10 years. Fashion brands from western countries need to adapt more localised strategies and decisions from managers who have experienced China. Alex pictured the blueprint for Intralink in the future and why he studied the Manchester Global MBA (he graduated with distinction in December 2020 and won “The Best Overall Student Award”).

This event came to the end with questions from the audience and networking.
