Welcome to the MBS China Centre newsletter!
The last few months were absolutely hectic but a truly fruitful season- with the launch of new programmes-- Renmin/Manchester MBA in March and Kelley/Manchester MBA in April in Beijing along with Manchester Global MBA and Tongji/Manchester MBA, China Centre has a total of four MBA programmes in the portfolio. The first group of Kelley Manchester MBA students from China went to Bloomington and enjoyed their induction and first workshop on campus at the University of Indiana.
Many congratulations to our China Centre graduates--over 70 of them flew over to Manchester to attend the very British graduation ceremony in Manchester! I proudly witnessed their transformation, hard work, laughter and tears and experienced the unforgettable and touching graduation ceremony moment as myself also graduated from the Global Executive MBA programme!
In the meantime, 99 high-calibre students(July16 intake) started their learning journey at Alliance Manchester Business School in the stunning hot summer. The induction was successfully held in Shanghai in July. We can’t achieve the great success without support from our alumni, workshop tutors and corporate partners. I’d like to take this opportunity to say a big thank to you all!
Enjoy reading and have a nice summer!

July is an exciting month for the final year students at the University of Manchester. With festive spirit in the air and celebrations lined up – the Global MBA finalists flew over from all parts of the world to join the home counterparts for the grand Graduation Ceremony on 18th July. Prior to the big day, a pre-graduation party initiated by China Centre was held at Manchester City Football club’s home ground – Etihad Stadium on 17th July. China centre Director Ms. Sherry Fu and Associate MBA Director Mr. Xavier Duran also joined Elaine for this big party.
After Elaine’s speech, 5 graduates from China centre, who notably thoroughly enjoyed their MBA experience, shared memorable moments of their MBA journey with their fellow colleagues and family members. The atmosphere was relaxed, delightful and mostly importantly celebratory! Having close family and friends made over the MBA years together at the iconic Etihad Stadium celebrating a personal achievement well worked for was such a great experience for the MBA graduates.
The Global MBAs graduation ceremony was arranged in the afternoon on Monday. Dean of Manchester Business School Prof. Fiona Devine delivered a congratulatory speech to the cohort. In the meantime, highlighted how the Business School has been utilizing the donation received last year from Lord Alliance of Manchester. The donation has been supporting the School on several meaningful projects, notable on the recently established Health Research Centre, which shall encourage research and benefit future students. After the speech, the ceremony was hosted by Professor Elaine Ferneley while each graduate were called one by one to receive their degree certificate. “I was waiting nervously for my name to be called. As I walked to the stage, had my hands shaken and were given the certificate I have been so passionately worked for- it was amazing!! It just happened too quickly!” said one of the Global MBA graduates. The ceremony marked an end to a 2.5-year investment of time and effort, yet it opens a brand new chapter in each graduate’s life – while the general management approach and practical experience accumulated are yet to put to test in everyone’s career and life, whether as a corporate manager or a starting up entrepreneur. May the post-MBA journey be full of exciting achievement and fun.

3rd March, China Centre hosted an open lecture by Mr. Chas Pope from Arup Group, the firm behind many of the world’s most iconic building designs – from Sydney Opera House to Beijing’s National Stadium (the ‘Bird’s Nest’) and 30 St Mary Axe (London’s ‘Gherkin’). The event was successfully held in Hilton Beijing with heated interest from students, alumni and candidates.
Chas is Associate Director of Arup with wealth of international experience and has been working in Beijing Since 2003 after graduation and having worked in Arup London Office.
For many of us, architectural design is a highly specialized subject. Yet we are all attracted to magnificent designs and excited about structural miracles.
‘Total design’ is a concept developed by founder of Arup Group, Mr. Ove Arup, who consistently strove for a true partnership between the architect and the engineer to achieve better design through collaboration to a new level, where technical aspects of design and aesthetic expectations integrate. This Concept also resonates with people from other sectors, as we often need to think outside our own areas of expertise in order to solve complex problems and issues.

It is the first time the China Centre organized this scale of graduation celebration at the centre. The China Centre prepared well for this special moment, decorating the lecture room with wall-size photo of the University of Manchester, offering for free the graduation gown. Our students were enthusiastic about the photo shooting, communicating with fellow alumni and Sherry and other school representatives. Sherry Fu made a speech, introducing the recent development of alumni and activities, and encouraging students to come back the school often, contributing their efforts for the school. After the speech, all participants sat in a much casual way to introduce themselves. One student described his career development and shift from working for others to working for self, and becoming an entrepreneur, during his study in MBS; one student mentioned about her career shift as well, from working in charge of a very small part of the company, to managing a wider responsibilities. It was from the study of MBA with MBS that gave them a holistic view of their work and enabled them a brighter career future. Family support was also highly appreciated during the talk. The talk brought the celebration to a climax. The study in the school came to an end, but indeed the spirit of the University ‘Original Thinking Applied’ will influence and benefit all students in their future study and work. Therefore, it is not an end, but a brand new start of the future.

2016 marks the 3rd consecutive year that Manchester Global MBA students have taken part in the Asia Pacific MBA Dessert Challenge. Over 70 business schools participated in this year’s challenge. Number of participants exceeded 1500. MBS students finished the race with a new record, celebrating the best performance to date.
During the 70 kilometers outdoor challenge, a total of 23 members took part, 12 of which officially competed, 2 worked as reporters, 9 are supporting team members. Over the course of 3 days, the weather has been extremely changeable. On the first day, the MBAs were greeted by sudden drop of temperature followed by complex stormy conditions. It is a test of physic and endurance. The following day was no less challenging, with strong winds and continuous drop of temperature. On the early morning of the third day, the tents went frozen when the temperature reached icy low level.
MBS has brought the most international team to Dessert Challenge 2016. The average age for MBS participants was 35, well exceeded the overall average age for the competition. Not only did they achieve the best record so far, they also formed the most international team. Coming to join the team, they had three students travelled all the way from Singapore.
Among MBS students, they balance personal life, career, study and physical training all together. There are career/industry-focused groups as well as interest-oriented groups such as marathon and outdoor activities established by students.
One of the merits shared by MBS students and alumni is the love for challenges. They challenge themselves by taking an MBA to take career to the next level, just like they enjoy the challenges physically and mentally brought by outdoor activities.

On 7 June, MBS China Centre organized an alumni company visit to Microsoft China Headquarters. This has been the second time we organized such visits to our alumni companies. This visit proved to be successful and fruitful, not only providing an opportunity for our Beijing alumni to gather together, but also a precious chance to go inside a world leading and most innovative multinational.
It was a working afternoon, but we still had over 10 alumni coming to join this visit. George Xue, who is one of our Global MBA alumni, and Head of Business Development at Microsoft, was the host of our visit this time. He firstly welcomed us all to Microsoft, and then guided us a comprehensive tour of the whole Microsoft buildings in Zhongguancun, one of the most famous high-tech parks in China and named as ‘China’s Silicon Valley’. Everybody in the delegation was impressed by the humanization design and care to its staff. We saw a pantry full of drinks and snacks on every floor; plenty of resting space with comfortable sofas, and full books; even a mini golf facility on the top floor; open working spaces to break the ‘invisible walls’ between people; well-equipped meeting rooms to enable global video conferences etc.; large choices of meals in the big enough canteens; and a well professionally equipped gym where George said he would regularly spent some short time exercising and get back to work refreshingly. Everywhere, our eyes were entertained by colorful decorations, logos, facilities. We took group photos at the innovatively designed long bridge between the two buildings.
After the tour, we went back to the meeting room where George delivered a speech, explaining in details about Microsoft, its strategy in China and globally, as well as his own career development.
At the beginning, George showed us all a short video, displaying all innovative and feasible future products Microsoft is working on, and how those are going to interacting with us and impacting on our life and work. AI, VR, intelligent cloud platform, big data, internet of thing – were frequently quoted throughout the sharing session. George also showed us in his mobile two AR products, which could communicate with him with human voice. He then explained to us Microsoft’s mission, strategy, and etc..
Microsoft was among the earliest multinationals to enter the China market since 1992. Microsoft has rapidly expanded its business across the country under its strategy of long-term investment and development, enabling and fueling China’s innovations. Microsoft boasts a robust partner ecosystem with 17,000 partners. In early 2015, Microsoft was awarded “The World's Top 10 Most Innovative of 2015 Companies in China " by Fast Company magazine due to its local product strategy and commitments to helping Chinese partners, and was included as one of " The Companies Remaking The Chinese Economy". Microsoft also established in Zhongguancun its Venture Accelerator to nurture highly potential start-ups. George welcomed and would like to facilitate our alumni’ entrepreneurship via this Accelerator.
George is responsible for driving strategic business deals and cultivating relationships with innovation partners in Greater China Region at Microsoft. Given the importance of localization and partnership strategies in Microsoft, George was at a strategic position to make every plan and decision with great patience and care. Quite recently he led his team successfully signing a collaborative deal with Xiaomi, one of China’s most innovative and fast developing enterprises, and was congratulated directly by Microsoft’s CEO. George sincerely shared with us his career development, encouraging all to grasp all opportunities, being confident and well prepared. He recalled how he was successfully recruited by Microsoft and each milestone on his career journey to more strategic tasks and position. His decision in studying with Manchester Business School surely facilitated him in going up the career pathway.
It was a successful visit though a small pity that we were unable to visit Microsoft’s fancy Demo Room. The visit enabled our alumni to mingle with each other more, had the first-hand experience of how a great enterprise is developing strategically and acquiring talents, and how our academic learning could be applied in real practice. We are anticipating more of such alumni company visits in the future.
