As the coronavirus pandemic stimulates the educational landscape to evolve faster than ever, the world is witnessing and experiencing the digital learning revolution. Over the years, China Centre has had the privilege to lead and influence the transnational education sphere in our region, offering an expanding portfolio of online, blended-learning courses. Attracting and supporting around 2000 high performing young professionals from all walks of life, the China Centre is growing strong with its ever-expanding alumni community while holistically empowering them to execute educational initiatives where they speak, they listen and they grow together.
We are very much committed to social responsibility in education. Bringing world-class education to those who are unable to study full-time on Manchester campus, the China Centre has hosted a series of Global Insight sessions in China that are free and open to the public. Each session is delivered by a leading academic from the University of Manchester offering a live classroom experience in action. Earlier this quarter saw the launch of “UoM NoW” amid COVID-19 event series where we urge the community to keep calm and share love and knowledge, marking the China Centre’s effort and determination in rallying together with alumni and local community at this difficult time.
What we can do, most importantly, is to support each other. Whether it is continuation of something good or the launch of something new, springtime at China Centre has never been a season to go unmarked.
China Centre Welcomed Manchester Global MBA New Students
From 7th to 8th January, the welcome event for Manchester Global Part-time MBA January 2020 new students was successfully held at the University of Manchester China Centre. 64 outstanding working professionals officially entered the University of Manchester. Ms. Sherry Fu, Director of the University of Manchester China Centre, Senior Programme Administrator Ms. Maria Serra and China Centre Student Support Team attended the induction and witnessed the new students embarking on their transformational learning journey.
China Centre Director joined the Dialogue with Top companies in Social Responsibility
On 15th January, innovation and Sustainability” 2019 Corporate Social Responsibility Forum was held by Shanghai Daily. Sherry Fu UoM China Centre Director was invited to host the Panel Discussion with Bayer, Corning, Delphi Technologies, Covestro, Shui On Land to share the experiences on innovation, sustainability and corporate social responsibility.
At The University of Manchester, our people are working together and with partners from across society to understand coronavirus (COVID-19) and its wide-ranging impacts on our lives. Researchers, teachers, students and professional service staff are combining their knowledge to contribute to the local, national and international response to the disease. This brings together the research and innovation strengths of our partnerships in an unprecedented way to focus on this public health crisis. Sherry Fu, Director of University of Manchester China Centre (‘China Centre’) returned to work amid widening coronavirus outbreak with a continuous effort in communicating and coordinating with Manchester team and overseas centres: adjusting workshop arragements for overseas students and encouraging Chinese alumni and Centre staff to show support for Wuhan and the rest of China however they can. In early February, China Centre officially announced to postpone all upcoming alumni events. Later, the China Centre launched “UoM act NoW” Social Responsibility Alumni Project Amid COVID-19, including 1 story-telling campaign to share about life during the epidemic, 1 clothing donation drive, 6 alumni sharing built in relevance to dealing with personal and corporate issues emerging from the outbreak in the fields of health, legal and finance as well as offering global insight sessions online to promote accessible lifelong learning especially at this difficult time.
Through thought-provoking dialogue and conversations, China Centre strives to encourage lifelong learning and bring global insights to the regional alumni community. With the aim to provide attendees with the opportunity to learn more about a diverse range of business subjects, from negotiation skills to service design, and building critical thinking to thrive in a changing environment, this quarter the China Centre invited speakers from AMBS, including Dr. Nick Collett shared about financial management, which provided an overview of the characteristics and functioning of financial markets in a global context to our prospective students on 9th January; Professor Arif Khurshedas illustrated to audience the unit spotlight on Foundation of Finance on 27th Feburary; Dr. Amedeo De Cesari provided an insight into recent financial trends and developments within global markets on 18th March; Professor Malcolm Smith shared about Negotiation Skills on 25th March, offering a great snapshot to the keys of successful negotiations, bringing to the audience a condense version of the popular negotiation skills and selling strategy module.
On 8th March, China Centre hosted a Strategic Branding in Fashion Industrial Talk online with Vogue Business China. Mr Lawrence Hua, alumnus of MSc Fashion Retailing from The University of Manchester was invited to share his memorable studying experience. Ms Cherry Ying, Senior Business Development & Consulting Manager, Vogue Business shared the fashion trends in the global marketing during the past 10 years as to analyse the impact of the outbreak of novel coronavirus on fashion industry. On 13th March, China Centre invited Manchester Global MBA senior alumnus Mr Simon Zhou to deliver an online sharing focusing on personal and professional development . Simon also shared his personal career development and valuable learning experiences with Manchester Global MBA programme. Later in March on the 28th's afternoon, DBA alumna Ms Catherine Zhao, former country manager of MAMMUT China shared her insights of fashion industrial trend after the outbreak of coronavirus from different aspects such as health development, eco-friendly textiles and AI technology. During the alumni industrial sharing event on 15th April, Ms Aileen Wei shared with our prospective students the latest trend in fashion industry together with branding strategies and how to discover new opportunities in this dynamic world.
On the evening of 14th January, The University of Manchester China Centre Marketing Club invited Ms. Jilu Chen, from Kaizao, a Consumer Co-Creation Community to share us the mindset and tools of open innovation for creative production. She has many years of experience in product design and design management at home and abroad, and highlighted that open innovation with Consumer let target users accompany the developing process, so that to help corporations getting feedbacks from the market, reducing risks of launching new products; creating products that users really like.

On the evening of 16th March, China Centre Student Support Team invited Mr Evan Hua, Distinction Graduate of the Year 2019 and Ms Shirley Qian, excellent current student from Jul 2019 intake to share their study tips and experience in the MBA journey. In the beginning of the webinar, Centre Director Ms Sherry Fu welcomed over 30 students from Jan 2020 and Jul 2019 intake and heartened them in the studies despite the outbreak of COVID-19. The event covered many topics, such as workshop preparation, time management, communication, etc. and received many positive feedbacks such as “very helpful to academic studies”.
Launch of “UoM NoW” Amid COVID-19 Alumni Event Series
On the evening of 24th March, China Centre launched “UoM NoW” activity project during COVID-19 and welcomed its first online alumni sharing session. During the talk, Dr Sihua Fan, Manchester DBA alumnus and Co-founder of Flory Technology explored the topic of Air Quality in Public Space: safety and hygiene and shared with more than 1500 audience online some popular practices in air quality purification and ventilation. Special cases amid COVID-19 were illustrated including Dr Fan’s charitable action in leading his company in helping hospitals on the front lines across China with indoor air quality purification and ventilation by donating and installing equipment. Audience raised interesting questions via live-stream platform and learnt from Dr Fan different types of pollution they were unfamiliar with, including the underestimated Ozone where exposure to ozone can cause serious health problems in plants and people.
On June 17th, the University of Manchester China Centre Alumni Marketing Club is delighted to Invite alumna Effie Dong and Grace Xia to share the topics of career development and transformation under VUCA circumstance.
