On 19th April, 2013, Manchester Business School China Centre offered an excellent open class on Strategic Management at The Portman Ritz-Carlton in Shanghai. More than 40 company executives and managers attended the class.

She teaches Strategic Management course for Manchester Business School Global MBA.

In this open class, Dr. Anne Smith gave a broad view on strategy. Strategy is not a pavilion in the air, but aims to solve the real development issues. She introduced some strategic analysis tools, such as Michael Porter’s Five Forces Model, but she also pointed out that even though this model can help us to analyse industry, to see it whether profitable or not, but it cannot guarantee you earn money  if your company enter this profitable industry, so people should keep critical thinking when learning.Dr. Anne Smith also elaborated with examples of Unilever and Ryanair how different companies choose different strategy that suitable for itself.

During the class, Dr. Anne Smith also inspired and encouraged audience to participate in the discussion and speak out their opinions. One Manager from an investment company raised the question that “Porter’s own company failed, does this mean five forces model is useless?”Dr. Anne Smith praised him for the spirit of positive doubt, and then commented that five forces model is just one of the strategic analysis tools, to manage a company requires a whole bunch of quality, you cannot judge the failure and success of a company for only one reason, the failure of the companycannot make the five forces model worthless, instead, it is still a quite useful tool in any companies.
