Career Panel Discussion on Self-Awareness
On 16th April, 2013, a Panel Discussion was held in Manchester Business School China Centre. The theme is “knowing yourself helps you lead yourself”. Three very senior career mentors were invited to share their thoughts on how to know your own value, talent and purpose with 40 MBS Global MBA Students and Alumni. They are:Ron Oltmanns, Senior VP &Chief Scientific of TTI Success Insights, Yimin Wang, Founder and Executive Coach of Sense Consulting and Simon Luo - Supply Chain Strategy & Innovation Director, Nike Greater China.

Ron started the discussion with three key questions, namely, “what has made me successful?”, “what do I still need to develop?” and “what motivates me?” the three questions aroused audience’ interest and inspire them to introspect, which is the first and important step of knowing oneself.

Simon, instead, gave the audience a vivid example of himself. He introduced his own career development in P&G, IBM and Nike, and he talked about his own experience of knowing his own weakness and how to truly make change to improve.

Yimin, as very senior executive coach, introduced how to handle some tough situations in the office, sometimes the relationship with colleague or boss is influenced by an artificial perception, enhanced by your personal emotion, what people need to do is recognize this and avoid it on purpose and go beyond this influence, that way can improve the relationship, instead of going worse and worse.

The panel also took questions from the floor on the issues raised by students and alumni. A student said he’s lack of the spirit of compromise and often stick to his own thoughts and ideas, 3 mentors helped him to analyze himself and gave suggestion on how to improve. Other questions raised were also answered with helpful advice.

This panel discussion is an important part of Manchester Business Career Service, which includes on line and off line services. It emphasizes a career journey: self-evaluation, industry and career research, Career matching, Jobs opportunity, self-marketing, Job hunting strategy, offer and negotiation. This panel discussion focused on the first, yet the most important step, which is self-evaluation.
