A Corporate Tour and Career Journey - Company Visit to Bayer China
We were excited to be invited by Sylvia Xu at Bayer China for a visual and history tour into this innovation driven company.
Sylvia embarked on her journey of Manchester Global MBA in July 2016 and will soon receive her well-earned MBA degree. Equally demanding huge commitment was her career at Bayer. She joined the company in 2008, coincidentally the same year The University of Manchester established its Centre in China. Since then, she has worked across multiple roles in corporate branding and PR, with a recent focus on digital communications.
Sylvia told us that Bayer’s links with China have a long tradition, going back to 1882 when the company first came to China. Aspirin production was set up in Shanghai as early as 1936, with famous Chinese film stars representing the brand. Currently there are over 10,000 employees working at Bayer China. It was a personal soft spot for Sylvia to talk about the company’s commitment to China, as she lead the project to create ‘A life Time in China’, a print publication rich with facts, stories and photographs threading together the company’s presence and effort in China. “I am a history lover, I am really proud to share the commitment of the company to China with colleagues and our clients” Said Sylvia
If length of time is an evidence for commitment, then the intensity of work required is another version that testifies commitment. When talked about the overall study experience, “demanding and hugely rewarding” were the words Sylvia used. The MBA course content requires a combination of independent and group work guided by workshops and tutorials, which means one need to really commit a significant amount of time and effort in order to do well.It was emotional for Sylvia to talk about career development.
It was 10 years’ ago in 2008, she joined Bayer’s Material Science business, and around the same time she got married and started a new life in Shanghai after graduation. The year 2018 has witnessed her career progression, while gaining Manchester Global MBA degree is a turning point allowing her to review and refresh thinking
China Centre was established in Shanghai in 2008. From offering part-time global MBA to making more part-time study options available to professionals in China, a decade’s of effort has been invested. Celebrating the first 10th year anniversary, an alumni gala dinner will be held in Shanghai on 26th September, please do not miss this opportunity and join your colleagues to celebrate!
